I honestly can’t believe somebody made money off this junk.

You see a little girl running through a supermarket and her line, “it’s so clean”….REALLY, wow? This movie was horrendous. You see empty stairwells, empty rooms (good lord buy some furniture already). Two beautiful women twirling in fields, in curtains, in their hair….nauseating!!! You see Ben’s head or half his body and him touching the ladies on their back or pulling his hand away. I didn’t care about anybody in this film. If you are going to make this special type of film you best do it quite well or don’t bother. As if the viewer isn’t already trying to piece some kind of story together the director goes further and makes what little lines there are in this worthless piece of celluloid uninteresting and completely void of detail! Oh and don’t think I’m not into art, imagery, impression etc, Oh I am, but this didn’t cut it, they should have left it all on the cutting floor. Same goes for the other characters in this movie, they whispher. Ben doesn’t say more than a few lines and get your hearing aids out because you can barely hear him. To the Wonder had me turning it off at 1:25 but wanting to turn it off after 20 minutes. Tree of Life made me “think” and I watched it twice in one weekend. That movie is not this movie and comes nowhere near it. I do not like to write reviews but I could not pass by without saying something about this dreadful movie. I am a film lover and I enjoy all genres of films. I kept passing by this movie “On Demand” and finally gave it my. Our favorite scene: Joan Crawford dazedly replacing her ailing daughter in the cast of a daytime TV soap opera. Surprisingly, one emerges from Mommie Dearest with more sympathy for the monstrous but intensely vulnerable Crawford than for her whining daughter (played as an adult by Diana Scarwid, and as a child by Mara Hobel). This is the film with the notorious "wire coat hanger" scene, just in case you need a reminder.

According to the film (and the book that preceded it), Joan Crawford was a licentious, child-beating behemoth, who stalked and postured through life as though it was one of her own pictures-more Strait-jacket than Mildred Pierce. The 1981 film version of this tome was evidently meant to be taken seriously, but the operatic direction by Frank Perry and the over-the-top portrayal of Joan Crawford by Faye Dunaway (whose makeup is remarkable) has always seemed to inspire loud laughter whenever and where-ever the film is shown.

When her adoptive mother Joan Crawford died in 1977, erstwhile actress/author Christina Crawford and her brother Christopher were left out of Joan Crawford's will, "for reasons which are well known to them." Industryites have suggested that it may have been this posthumous act of rejection rather than an alleged lifetime of parental abuse that inspired Christina Crawford to pen her scathing autobiography Mommie Dearest.
